    How Does Deep TMS Work?

    What To Expect

During Deep TMS treatment, a special helmet containing a magnetic coil is placed over your head, focused on an area of the brain associated with depression. BrainsWay’s unique coil design enables deep and broad stimulation, resulting in activation of neurons and reduced likelihood of targeting errors.

You’ll be comfortably sitting in a chair, awake, and alert during the treatment, and you can resume normal activities immediately after. It is a noninvasive and clinically proven procedure.

    Shortest Clinically Proven Treatments

BrainsWay offers a 20-minute Deep TMS treatment protocol for depression patients that has been validated extensively in placebo-controlled research. Treatment involves sitting comfortably in a chair in your healthcare provider’s office and wearing the helmet for approximately 20 minutes, five days per week, for one month.

Deep TMS is a noninvasive treatment proven to offer relief for various mental illnesses. While most insurance companies cover Deep TMS, eligibility varies between insurance carriers. Deep TMS does not have any systemic side effects. It is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation for the treatment of depression and OCD that does not require surgery or implantation of electrodes. During the treatment process, patients will hear a tapping sound and feel some pressure over the treatment site. Deep TMS side effects usually do not cause any persistent discomfort; the most common side effect can be a mild headache or scalp discomfort that typically goes away after the first few treatments.

Deep TMS treatment is safe to combine with any sort of medication or psychotherapy, under the direction of the patient’s physician. Deep TMS is both noninvasive and found to be effective in treating a variety of mental illnesses, as a standalone treatment, or in combination with other forms of therapy.

Deep TMS is widely covered by insurance plans; the coverage depends on the treatment type, geographical location, and insurance plan. In the U.S., most commercial insurances and Medicare are now covering Deep TMS for depression and anxious depression. Coverage for OCD is more limited but expanding. Several insurers are now covering Deep TMS treatment for OCD, including Highmark BCBS, Centene, HCSC BCBS, Tricare, and Palmetto Medicare.

Coverage requirements and payment varies based on specific insurance plans.
