How Does Deep TMS Work?
What To Expect
During Deep TMS treatment, a special helmet containing a magnetic coil is placed over your head, focused on an area of the brain associated with depression. BrainsWay’s unique coil design enables deep and broad stimulation, resulting in effective activation of neurons and reduced likelihood of targeting errors.
You’ll be comfortably sitting in a chair, awake, and alert during the treatment, and you can resume normal activities immediately after. It is a noninvasive and clinically proven procedure.
Shortest Clinically Proven Treatments
BrainsWay offers a 20-minute Deep TMS treatment protocol for depression patients that has been validated extensively in placebo-controlled research. Treatment involves sitting comfortably in a chair in your healthcare provider’s office and wearing the helmet for approximately 20 minutes, five days per week, for one month.
Deep TMS is a noninvasive treatment proven to offer relief for various mental illnesses. While most insurance companies cover Deep TMS, eligibility varies between insurance carriers. As Deep TMS is safe to combine with other forms of therapy, many insurance providers consider those currently undergoing medical treatment or psychotherapy, as well as treatment-resistant patients, to be eligible for Deep TMS.
Treatment resistant refers to patients who don’t respond to traditional forms of medical management and counseling.
Deep TMS has been rigorously tested in over 60 controlled clinical trials for varied brain disorders in leading institutions worldwide. The FDA has cleared BrainsWay Deep TMS for the treatment of depression and anxious depression in the United States.
BrainsWay is cleared by the FDA as an adjunct treatment for adult patients suffering from depression. The FDA has also cleared BrainsWay Deep TMS for the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxious depression, and smoking addiction in the U.S.
Deep TMS does not have any systemic side effects. It is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation for the treatment of depression and OCD that does not require surgery or implantation of electrodes. During the treatment process, patients will hear a tapping sound and feel some pressure over the treatment site. Deep TMS side effects usually do not cause any persistent discomfort; the most common side effect can be a mild headache or scalp discomfort that typically goes away after the first few treatments.
Deep TMS treatment is safe to combine with any sort of medication or psychotherapy, under the direction of the patient’s physician. Deep TMS is both noninvasive and found to be effective in treating a variety of mental illnesses, as a standalone treatment, or in combination with other forms of therapy.
Deep TMS is widely covered by insurance plans; the coverage depends on the treatment type, geographical location, and insurance plan. In the U.S., most commercial insurances and Medicare are now covering Deep TMS for depression and anxious depression. Coverage for OCD is more limited but expanding. Several insurers are now covering Deep TMS treatment for OCD, including Highmark BCBS, Centene, HCSC BCBS, Tricare, and Palmetto Medicare.
Coverage requirements and payment varies based on specific insurance plans.
About Deep TMS for Depression
BrainsWay Deep TMS was cleared by the FDA for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms among patients who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatments in the current episode.
How Effective is Deep TMS in Treating Depression and Anxious Depression?
Efficacy of BrainsWay’s Deep TMS system in alleviating depression symptoms has repeatedly been demonstrated in multiple clinical studies and real clinical usage.
In real clinical practice settings, the majority of treatment-resistant depression patients have benefitted from Deep TMS. Among patients who completed 30 treatment sessions, nearly 3 in 4 achieved clinical response and nearly 1 in 2 achieved remission.
Deep TMS with medication shows a significant increase in response and remission rates compared to medication alone.
