Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression

How Does Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treat Depression?

A unique and innovative treatment, called Deep TMS, is now poised to offer true relief to people who suffer from depression. While antidepressants, the most common solution offered by psychiatrists, try to balance the chemicals in our brain in order to treat depression, they often prove to be ineffective and sometimes even harmful. Roughly 40% of people with depression are resistant to antidepressants, meaning they don’t experience any improvement in their symptoms, while many more refrain from taking antidepressants due to their adverse side effects.

At BrainsWay, we took another approach to depression treatment — Deep TMS. Deep TMS, or Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, offers a noninvasive solution for people with Major Depressive Disorder. Using a special helmet-like device that contains BrainsWay’s patented H-coils, we create a magnetic field that gently stimulates the parts of the brain responsible for mood regulation. Although it may sound scary, it is simply a magnet and can be compared to an MRI.

With extensive research, neurologists were able to identify specific brain regions that are associated with mood disorders (such as depression).  Stimulating these specific neural pathways has been shown to reduce, and even eliminate, the symptoms of depression, even  for those with treatment-resistant depression.

Is Deep TMS Safe?

In 2009, BrainsWay received FDA clearance for Deep TMS as a treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The clinical trials earning us our FDA clearance have shown BrainsWay’s Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to be a safe, well-tolerated, and effective treatment for depression. In another randomized, double-blind clinical trial, more than one-third of medication-resistant patients achieved remission from MDD. In real clinical practice, remission rates were even higher with more than half of recipients achieving full remission.

Deep TMS is one of the few treatment options for depression that has no systemic side effects. A small portion of people receiving treatment report feeling limited side effects, including pain or discomfort at the application site or jaw. Slight adjustments of the helmet relieve the pain or discomfort and such sensations usually subside as treatment continues. BrainsWay Deep TMS has helped thousands of treatment-resistant patients finally feel better, without harsh side effects.
